The American Musicological Society (AMS) was founded in 1934 to advance research in the various fields of music as a branch of learning and scholarship.  3,600 individuals and 1,100 institutional subscribers from over forty nations participate in the Society.

The Society for Music Theory (SMT) promotes music theory as both a scholarly and a pedagogical discipline. Today our Society has a membership of over 1200 music theorists worldwide, whose interests embrace a varied and growing range of subject matter.

The Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) was founded in 1955 to promote the research, study, and performance of music in all historical periods and cultural contexts. SEM has an international membership of over 1800 individuals dedicated to the study of all forms of music from diverse humanistic and social scientific perspectives.
